Firstly, are u already in Japan? If no, then buy the rail pass as it’s definitely cheaper. If u are already in Japan, u can get the shinkansen tickets are any of the JR train stations and buying in advance is fine. You can check the timing and pricing at: http://www.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi. Great help when i was planning my trip to Japan. Good luck!

It depends on situation but if you take Nozomi one way ticket to Shin Osaka as fixed price without any JR pass it costs Yen14,250 per person.
Cheaper way
Get bus overnight service there are many airconditioned bus service from Tokyo to Osaka. It costs around Yen4000.
JR train tickets (including shinkansen) are available for purchase up to one month in advance. In addition to JR ticket offices, you can buy them at major travel agencies, and it just so happens that the largest Japanese travel agency, JTB, has offices overseas. But you’ll need to make a phone call to the JTB office or visit them in person.
A shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is 14,250 yen.
A JR Pass is 28,300 yen, so if you are making a round trip, it’s slightly cheaper to use it instead of buying regular train tickets.
Airfare from Tokyo to Osaka can be as low as 12,000 yen, so that’s a cheaper alternative.
The cheapest way to get from Tokyo to Osaka is to take the night bus. A one-way trip can be as cheap as 3,900 yen. It’s probably not worth getting on the bus at 10pm in Tokyo and getting off in Osaka at 7:30am, if your plan is to enjoy your trip.
